Barbell Standing Military Press

Execution Guide

  1. Unrack the barbell at collarbone height with hands just outside shoulder-width.
  2. Stand with feet hip-width apart, core braced, and glutes squeezed.
  3. Press the bar overhead in a straight line, moving your head back slightly to clear the bar.
  4. Lock the bar out overhead with your head pushed through (between your arms).
  5. Lower the bar back to the collarbone under control.

Range of Motion

Collarbone level to full lockout overhead.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ×Excessive back arching (turning it into an incline press)
  • ×Pressing the bar in front of the face instead of straight up
  • ×Not bracing the core and glutes
